Ford Motor Company is set to recall more than 1 million vehicles in the United States due to problems with rearview cameras that could potentially increase the risk of a crash. This recall affects around 1,075,299 vehicles from the 2021 to 2025 model years, encompassing a wide range of models including the Bronco, F-150, Edge, Escape, Corsair, Expedition, and several others, as reported by Reuters.
The issue stems from a software glitch in the accessory protocol interface module, which may lead to the rearview camera image either delaying, freezing, or not displaying at all. This is a significant concern as it can impair driver visibility when the vehicle is in reverse. The automaker plans to resolve the issue by issuing a free over-the-air software update for the affected vehicles.
Ford has announced that owners will be notified of the recall via letters by June 16, 2025, with an additional letter to be sent when the software fix is available in the third quarter of 2025. This recall comes amid heightened scrutiny following a previous situation where Ford incurred a US civil penalty of up to $165 million, levied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for delayed recalls of faulty rearview cameras.
