General Motors has decided to reduce the number of production shifts at its Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. This move comes in response to decreasing demand and the impact of U.S. trade policies. The plant will see a reduction from three shifts to two, which will shift the focus more towards Canadian sales and scaling back exports to the U.S., as reported by Reuters.
This change will directly affect approximately 700 workers at the Oshawa facility. GM has promised to support these employees during the transition. Nonetheless, the decision has drawn criticism from Unifor, the union representing the workers, who described the move as "reckless" and called for measures to minimize job losses.
The decision is partly influenced by U.S. tariffs under the Trump administration, which have impacted production strategies in the automotive industry. To balance the reduced production at Oshawa, GM is ramping up manufacturing activities at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, facility.
