Qatar Airways is on the verge of finalizing a major deal to purchase around 100 widebody jets from Boeing, with the option to acquire an additional 100. This significant agreement is expected to be announced during U.S. President Donald Trump's forthcoming Middle East tour, which includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The deal highlights the competitive landscape among Middle Eastern carriers, as they strive to secure notable contracts ahead of the presidential visit. As Reuters reported, Qatar Airways is leveraging the increasing demand for international travel, establishing itself as a central hub through Doha.
The potential agreement, described as a multibillion-dollar package, coincides with larger regional movements such as a previously mentioned $100 billion arms package offer from President Trump to Saudi Arabia. This demonstrates the broader geopolitical and economic engagements between the U.S. and Gulf nations.
Last year, Qatar Airways expanded its order for Boeing 777X aircraft by adding 20 more Boeing 777-9s, reaching a total of 94 commercial and cargo Boeing 777X aircraft. The expansion also includes a commitment for 40 additional GE9X engines. CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer highlighted that following this major aircraft acquisition, the airline plans to slow its growth rate to maintain a high service quality. This strategic move underscores Qatar Airways' ambition to lead the aviation sector while ensuring excellence in its operations.
