Toyota is moving part of its GR Corolla sports car production from Japan to the UK, planning a $56 million investment to set up a dedicated production line at the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. This move is aimed at tapping into the plant's existing capabilities to meet high demand from North American markets.
The investment will enable the Derbyshire facility to produce 10,000 GR Corollas annually by mid-2026, primarily for export to North America. Currently, the manufacturing of the GR Corolla is done at the Motomachi Plant in Japan, which is operating at full capacity. By shifting some production to the UK, Toyota hopes to reduce delivery wait times for its North American customers while utilizing the underused capacity at the Burnaston plant, as reported by Reuters.
Toyota's decision to shift production is not influenced by U.S. auto tariffs but is a strategic move to leverage existing facilities efficiently. The Burnaston plant, which has been operational since 1992, will begin producing the high-margin GR Corolla model alongside the Corolla hatchback. This expansion into the UK also aligns with Toyota's broader strategy of optimizing production processes for its premium GR series, known for large profit margins despite lower sales volumes.
