Alphabet's self-driving car division, Waymo, has initiated a recall affecting 1,212 vehicles after several incidents where cars collided with roadway barriers. The recall is in response to a flaw in the vehicles' ability to detect or react appropriately to these barriers, as noted in a regulatory filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
To address the issue, Waymo has rolled out a software update aimed at correcting the vehicles' detection and response capabilities. This corrective measure comes amid increasing scrutiny from federal regulators. Reuters reported that the NHTSA is currently probing Waymo's autonomous vehicles, following reports of crashes and potential violations of traffic laws.
This recent recall is not the company's first. In a related event, Waymo recalled 672 vehicles last year after a collision with a telephone pole in Phoenix. Waymo remains under investigation by the NHTSA, as it seeks to ensure the safety of its autonomous technology.
